Mark W Barnish

BA, FCA, BFP, DChA, MAAT.

Joined NSMI as a member in January 2014 and was elected to Council as Honorary Treasurer in January 2014 also.

Having previously been involved with the Institute as its auditor, I accepted the invitation to join Council as Treasurer following an invite from former President Ted Turner. I have been involved over many years with local charities and I was particularly attracted to the unique work NSMI does locally and wanted to give them my support and so accepted the invitation.

I am currently part of the honorary officers group being Treasurer and sit on the Finance and General Purposes committee and the property sub-group.

Was educated locally completing my secondary education with “O” and “A” level exam success at St Joseph’s College Trent Vale. I then read Geography at the University of Wales -Aberystwyth graduating with an honours in Geography in 1976.

I then joined Peat Marwick Mitchell’s (later to become KPMG )Stoke-on-Trent office  and qualified with first time passes as a Chartered Accountant in 1979. After completing training and being promoted through various management grades I was made a Partner in the firm in 1989. I was an Audit partner with KPMG for 14 years when the practice was transferred to Baker Tilly in 2003. I remained partner (including specialising in charity and education sector) until retirement from professional life in 2009.

I then spent 8 years working as Finance director initially for St John of God Hospitaller Services (4yrs) and The Camphill Village Trust (4yrs).These two Charities were both providers of care and support to individuals with complex learning difficulties and mental health challenges. Both were struggling with financial and governance issues which I helped substantially to solve.
