About Us

The North Staffordshire Medical Institute was established in 1961 as an independent charity to provide funds for medical and surgical research and to facilitate medical education.

Whilst the education and research aspects of our work continue to be funded by the charitable donations, the Wade Conference Centre operates as a registered charity with any surplus monies being used to fund medical research and education in accordance with the terms of the trust. It can be hired at most attractive rates by individuals,

groups, organisations or companies, whether medical or otherwise.

The North Staffordshire Medical Institute was opened in 1965 and was the first purpose built Postgraduate Centre in Britain. It was built at a cost of £100,000, which was raised by public appeal.

Current Chairman

In March 1969 under the patronage of the Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire a successful appeal was launched and led to the building of the Research Unit originally sited at the rear of the Medical Institute housing general-purpose research laboratories, data-processing facilities, an Isotope Laboratory and the Department of Bio-Medical Engineering and Medical Physics. In 1997 a further successful appeal led to the building of the Industrial and Community Health Centre located within the Research Unit.

In 2001, our Conference and Seminar building was completely refurbished by award-winning architects. This has continued and now provides a modern facility for displays, exhibitions, seminars, meetings, conferences and even social occasions. It contains lecture theatres and a range of flexible seminar and meeting rooms that can be provided with audio-visual equipment. There are also a number of informal seating areas, a snack bar and rooms for private dining, and most areas are air-conditioned.

Our Vision

To be recognised as a leading local charity and vital contributor to the improvement of community health and education, by facilitating medical research through a unique grants programme achieved from sustainable funding.

Our Mission

We will be an increasingly vibrant and sustainable provider of quality medical and scientific research grants. We will promote our continuing success to both the local and wider community in order to create new partnerships which will leverage additional income in order to increase and expand our future grants programme. The Institute’s Conference Centre facility will be run as a cost effective educational and networking resource for the community.
