John Muir became a member of the North Staffordshire Medical Institute in 1972 and was elected to Council and the Finance and General-Purpose Committee in 2014. He was then appointed to Chairman in 2019 and stepped down from this role in 2021 but is still an active member of Council.

John was a Consultant Orthodontist for over forty-four years, the longest serving in the NHS.

His has a diverse range of hobbies including an interest in silverwork, jewellery, and Ancient Egypt.

He has worked on excavations, particularly at Amarna, at one time the capital of Akhenaten and Nefertiti.
