Research Awards 2026

NOW OPEN

This year the Research Grant Award application offers two funding application streams;
£25,000
Standard NSMI Research Award Scheme
£50,000
NSMI PhD Studentship 2026
Standard NSMI Research Award Scheme

Grant applications welcomed for up to £25,000 to fund research project costings that include example expenses such as; consumables costing, travel expenses, publication fees (where host institution will not cover the cost, justification for publishing in Journals not covered by a read and publish agreement is required), equipment purchases, fixed-term contracted staff (e.g. temporary laboratory technician posts).

NSMI PhD Studentship 2026

This year the NSMI will be funding 1 x PhD studentship application for £50,000. This funding proposal contains the same foundation and principle as the “Standard NSMI Research Award Scheme”. However, Principal Investigators are able to include funding costs for tuition fees and bench fees associated with a PhD studentship. This funding is not intended to cover a PhD studentship stipend.

For both types of grant applications match finding is encouraged. Further FAQs regarding schemes can be found in the Appendix.

Applications should be submitted via the online portal here. Funding will close at 5pm Monday 24th August 2026.

For further information please contact NSMI Research Awards Committee (RAC) Chair, Dr Abigail V Roberts (a.v.rutter@keele.ac.uk) and for queries regarding submission please contact Mrs. Jeanette Forrester (jeanette@nsmedicalinstitute.co.uk).
